Ma Ying-Jeou was elected as Chairman of the Kuomintang(KMT) by party members on in 2005. He resigned in 2007 after being indicted regarding charges of misuse of official funds during his tenure as the mayor of Taipei from 1998-2004.
Ma announced his intentions to run in the 2008 Taiwanese elections in 2008, and on May 2, 2007, the KMT party officially named him their party nominee.
