Frank Hsieh is a native of Taipei; he was born in 1946. Hsieh majored in law at National Taiwan University and received his master’s degree from Kyoto University.
Hsieh drafted the constitution of the Democratic Progressive Party in 1986, and he served as the chairman of the DPP from 2000 to 2002.
In 2008, after the DPP lost 81 of 113 seats to the Kuomintang (KMT) party in Taiwan, Hsieh was again appointed as chairman of the DPP, replacing Chen Shui-bian.
Hsieh formally announced his candidacy in the Taiwanese 2008 presidential election on February 16, 2008. He was the second person to announce his intent to run after former KMT chairman Ma Ying-Jeou. Since February, he has won 45% of DPP primary votes.
